PublicationMIE 2026 — Clinical Diagnosis of Rare Diseases using Leaky Noisy-OR Bayesian Networks
Medical Informatics Europe (MIE) 2026
Paper by F. Roucoux and S. Jodogne (UCLouvain / ICTEAM) accepted at MIE 2026. Presents a probabilistic method for rare disease diagnosis using leaky noisy-OR Bayesian networks automatically constructed from Orphanet and HPO data. The model contains over 8,000 diseases and 9,000 phenotype variables, and achieves 56.2% Top-3 diagnostic accuracy on 384 real clinical cases, competitive with state-of-the-art tools. Released as free and open-source software.

MilestoneEEG Data Integration Strategy Defined
UCLouvain — ICTEAM
Following participation in the COST CA24161 Management Committee, a strategy for EEG data integration into CLINOM-X was defined, adopting DICOM WG-32 and BIDS standards, aligning metadata with COST recommendations, and leveraging the Orthanc ecosystem for EEG data addressing from OpenMRS.

MilestoneRare Disease Diagnostic Pipeline — Accepted at MIE 2026
UCLouvain — ICTEAM
A rare disease diagnostic pipeline was developed, leveraging HPO/Orphanet annotations within a Noisy-OR probabilistic model. Evaluated on 300+ clinical cases, it achieves a Top-3 accuracy of 56.2%, competitive with current state-of-the-art tools. The work has been accepted at MIE 2026.

MilestoneOpenMRS Confirmed as Technological Foundation
UCLouvain — ICTEAM
OpenMRS was confirmed as the technological foundation for electronic data collection, offering concept-oriented modelling, configurable forms, and REST/FHIR interfaces. A Java REST client is under development, already supporting full management of core resources (Patients, Visits, Encounters, Observations, Concepts). FHIR integration strategy defined: QuestionnaireResponses stored as JSON within OpenMRS Observations, and Questionnaires as Concepts, with UUID-based alignment.

MilestoneExtended Analysis — Ontologies, Phenotype-Gene Linkage & Test Dataset
UCLouvain — ICTEAM
Continued analysis with three additional requirements identified: integration of standardised ontologies and vocabularies; phenotype-to-gene and gene-to-phenotype linkage (the database now holds over 640,000 such links); and construction of a shareable test dataset of 300+ realistic rare disease clinical cases with formalised clinical and genetic data, supported by HPO annotations linked to OMIM, Orphanet, and Decipher.
